Luke Presents Jesus

Luke had an extensive knowledge of the life and teaching of the Lord Jesus. He must have known and met many of the disciples and perhaps became one of them himself before, or shortly after, Jesus died and rose again. His carefully researched and recorded text brings out events and teachings that are important for us to grasp. These reveal the depth of love Jesus had for his people: the sin-bound, oppressed, possessed, maimed, crippled, leperous, unlead, impoverished, hungry, outcast, diseased, demented, discouraged and mournful amongst Israel and those outside the Covenant people of God.

Luke weaved a great amount of detail about Jesus' life and ministry into his book including: 77 travel events (some with topography),1 miracles, people, oppositions (especially by lawyers, scribes and Pharisees), teachings including 43 of 100 parables,2 21 of 34 prayer times3 and more than 50 events fulfilling prophecy4. The Book of Luke was written for the purpose of capturing and sharing the work (Luke 19:10) and teaching of Jesus Christ of Nazareth as he stated in Acts 1:1-2, "The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen."

"It is written" (found 80 times in the Bible) is the highest form of retention of valuable and historical information. Luke took multiple pieces of information about Jesus and His ministry from his disciples, relatives (mother, half-brothers and half-sisters), the apostles, and others and brought them into one whole account. Luke gathered with diligence the historical accounts, some conveyed in written form and some by oral transmission, and assembled and collated those into an orderly, logical, written text.5 His work was very detailed and accurate because every name, city, building or location that can be verified has been validated. 6, 7, 8

It was dedicated to Theophilus (beloved of God) who must have been a real person, a Roman official of some sort and thus addressed with terms of significance (cf. Acts 23:26; 24:2-3; 26:25), and who was now beloved of God as part of God's royal priesthood (1 Pet 2:9).

Luke 3:23-28

This gave Mary's lineage while Matt 1:1-16 gave Joseph's lineage. 1Kgs 6:11-12; 11:1-43 and Jer 22:30 must be noted here that the Messiah could not come through Solomon's royal lineage, i.e. from Joseph genetically, but could come from David through Nathan via Mary. This greatly restricted who qualified as the Messiah. But only Joseph's lineage, through Solomon, qualified for access to the throne. Thus the miraculous conception [as "her seed", Gen 3:15] was the only solution. Jesus did not descend from Joseph [with either Adamic weakness, 1Cor 15:22, or via Solomon] but he had the royal right from Joseph, his adoptive father, to the throne of Israel. The answer is in Lk 12:22-34; 1Tim 6:8-19. Any accumulation from our fleshly desire to "be rich" (to have many things) is too much. Beyond our material needs we should give to others to the extent that we create the opportunity (need) for our bountiful Lord to provide for that need for us.

Man possesses both physical and spiritual (non-physical) aspects. We think, plan, measure time, tell jokes, make poetry, appreciate art, make music, craft tools, communicate in concepts expressed in words and symbols (in math, science, economics, medicine, music, writing, etc.), contemplate causes and effects, explore relationships between things and groups of things, evaluate and apply heirarchy to objects, behaviors, and ideas, and much, much more. Mt 9:13; Acts 16:31-34; 1Ti 1:15 || Lk 3:8; 13:16; Rom 4:11-12, 16; Gal 3:7, 17 || The use of Gk hoti here showed the immediacy of salvation benefits to Zacchaeus but in Lk 23:43 without hoti the benefit of salvation was delayed to the thief on the cross unto the future resurrection day (John 5:28-29; 2Th 1:7, 10; 2:1; 4:16). Zacchaeus and his household continued living in that salvation as disciples while that believing thief died that same day, very soon after Jesus died, with his legs broken (John 19:31-32). [See: Lk 23:43] Note the very next statement in Lk 19:11 used the Gk hoti, "because" to declare the immediacy for the parable presented. The word hoti was used likewise in Lk 4:21; 19:3, 17, 21, 31.

There is no higher witness than God saying about himself, "I am" (Exo 3:14), thereby expressing himself to be "the unchangeable being" (Mal 3:6). All living creatures, having a beginning, are constantly changing, hence only "becoming." But God is unchangeable and remains the sole continuous "being," therefor the highest being and Lord of all (Gen 35:10; Exo 9:14; Psa 46:10; 86:10; Isa 46:9; Jer 10:6-7)!

Contrast: Dt 4:26
The prior use of Gk hoti in Lk 4:21 and in Lk 19:9 [see above] showed the immediacy of salvation benefits to Zacchaeus [see Lk 2:11; 4:21; 5:26; 19:9] but in Lk 23:43 without hoti the benefit of salvation was delayed to the thief on the cross unto the future resurrection day (John 5:28-29; 2Th 1:7, 10; 2:1; 4:16). Zacchaeus and his household (Luke 19:9) continued living in that salvation as disciples. But that believing thief died that same day, very soon after Jesus died, with his legs broken (John 19:31-33). The thief would only get to live in his salvation at the future resurrection day of John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15; 1Th 4:14-17; 5:9; 2Th 1:7, 10; 2:1; 4:16.

Bullinger's Companion Bible Notes and (Jn 11:25; Acts 26:23, 1Cor 15:20, Col 1:18, 1Th 4:15-18, and Rev 1:5) is "Verily I say unto thee today, 'Thou shalt be with me in paradise'," i.e. at that future promised day (Jn 5:28-29; Acts 24:15). All believers in Christ who were dead (especially those whose life was unjustly taken away, Rev 6:9-10; 20:4) are raised to life again upon Jesus' return in his second advent (1Th 4:14-17) but not before. || 2Cor 12:3-4; Rev 2:7 || paradise, 2Cor 12:4; 5:8; Rev 2:7; Lk 16:22-23 [See: An examination of Luke 23:43.
